Best cleanser for adult acne

For adult acne, PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash 10% Benzoyl Peroxide is our most effective pick. Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen into the pore, which kills the acne-causing bacteria that thrive there, and it helps loosen the dead skin cells that clog pores. It is labeled for face and body, so it also covers chest and back breakouts. This is the highest benzoyl peroxide strength sold over the counter, so start once a day and increase only if your skin tolerates it. Our ethical pick, The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash, is cruelty free and vegan. It pairs tea tree oil with salicylic acid, which dissolves oil inside pores. The table below compares price and time to results. Give either cleanser about two weeks of steady use. With PanOxyl, massage it in for a minute or two before rinsing, and use white towels and pillowcases, because benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric.

Why it works

Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide kills C. acnes, the bacteria involved in acne, and unlike antibiotics, bacteria have not been shown to become resistant to it. It is sold over the counter at 2.5% to 10%, and lower strengths such as 2.5% cause less dryness and irritation. Combining it with a retinoid or an antibiotic works better than either alone and helps prevent antibiotic resistance. It bleaches hair, towels and colored fabric, and can cause an allergic rash. In 2025 FDA testing, more than 90% of products had undetectable or very low levels of benzene, a breakdown product; store it at room temperature or cooler and replace it every 10 to 12 weeks.

Salicylic acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid. Because it mixes with skin oil, it can work inside pores, where it loosens the bonds between dead cells and helps clear plugs, so it works best on blackheads and whiteheads. It also has mild anti-inflammatory effects. US over-the-counter acne products may contain 0.5% to 2%. Much of the published research covers stronger peels done in clinics, so evidence for everyday cleansers and leave-on products is more limited. Dryness and peeling are the main side effects. Body-wide toxicity from absorption is very rare and has been linked to strong preparations applied over large areas.
