Best day and night serum for oily sensitive skin

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is the most effective pick for oily, sensitive skin, morning and night. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, helps regulate visible oil, supports the skin barrier so skin is less reactive, and helps calm the look of redness. Zinc PCA adds further oil-balancing support. The formula is water based and lightweight, so it layers easily under moisturizer and sunscreen without feeling greasy, which suits oily skin that dislikes heavy textures. Apply a few drops to clean skin in the morning and evening, before heavier creams. Because this is a high strength of niacinamide, sensitive skin can sometimes react with redness or tingling, so patch test it on a small area for a few days first, and if your skin feels irritated, cut back to once a day. The brand also advises using it in a separate routine from vitamin C products.

Why it works

Niacinamide (vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that skin cells use to make molecules involved in energy and repair. In skin care it is used for dark spots, redness, oiliness and fine lines. Several controlled studies, mostly small and some industry-sponsored, found 4% to 5% creams reduced dark spots and improved fine lines over 8 to 12 weeks; in one trial 2% was not enough to lighten spots, and benefits faded after stopping. In one acne trial a 4% gel worked about as well as a topical antibiotic gel. It is well tolerated, though some people find it drying. It is not a sunscreen.
